REGENTS EARTH SCIENCE

Congratulations on completing the Specialized High School Test. Good luck with the rest of the high school application process.

THE CURRICULUM

At Delta, eighth graders follow the New York State Regent's Earth Science curriculum.  The Regents will be taken in June and all 8th graders are expected to sit for the test. Passing the end of the year Regent's Exam permits students to begin meeting the states' requirements for a Regent's diploma and will allow them to take advantage of a more advanced science curriculum in high school.

Earth Science is the study of Earth’s processes and its place within our solar system.  The topics included in the curriculum are: Earth in Space and as a System; Maps and Models of the Earth; Structure and Motion of the Earth; The Atmosphere and Weather; Minerals and Rocks; Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition; The Dynamic Crust: Plate Tectonics; and Earth's History and The Geological Time Scale.

The Earth Science Big Goals include:

  1. Understand that many of the major phenomena that we observe on Earth involve interactions among components of air, water, and land (atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere).
  2. Describe Earth and celestial phenomena using principles of relative motion and perspective.
  3. Use the knowledge that the Earth is in a dynamic state to explain history of the Earth and geological changes, past and present.
  4. Use methods of scientific inquiry to develop explanations for natural phenomena.
  0 0 0 What are we studying?
In Earth Science we are currently studying Unit 5: Minerals and Rocks. Students will study how minerals formed and will identify unknown rock-forming minerals by performing basic tests and draw conclusions based on the results of the these tests and the proper interpretation Earth Science Reference Table. Students will classify Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic rocks as well as make further classifications within each category (i.e. intrusive vs. extrusive igneous or regional vs. local metamorphic). Finally, students will explain the relationship between the various rocks and explain the rock cycle.

For Earth Science Students (and others): "The Hubble Telescope's Latest Images" ... are AMAZING!

Go back at visit the Earth Viewer for various cities -- look both at night and during the day. The images at night are very dark with yellow dots (the lights from the cities). The images during the day provide you with a view of the landscape.  When it is noon here, what time will it be in Sydney, Australia? When it is noon here, what time will it be in London? Look at all the different types of images that can be generated too on the Earth and Moon Viewer.

Pace yourself. Homework will be coming at a steady clip. Doing AMSCO homework every night will help you to keep up!
